Before we left Ely, Nevada we
tried to get another spare inner tube, as we
already had two flats in two days and were now
out of spares. The only place in town that would
sell tubes was NAPA Auto Parts, but of course
they didn't have the right size. So we ordered
it and planned to pick it up three days later
when we were coming near Ely again anyway. They
promissed us it would be there by then, no
problem.
We continued on to Great
Basin
National Park and set up camp there. |

The morning was nice and
relatively cool, so we booked a tour of the Lehman Caves
for the afternoon and headed up the mountain,
a really nice ride. Up there we did a little
hike, but it was already getting too warm for
much more.
The cave tour was a welcomed cool off,
interesting, and the young tour guide (a local
highschool girl) did a great job. |

The main reason we came to Great
Basin NP was to see the night
sky, as it is a certified "dark sky"
park. Stupid us, we didn't check the moon phases
and of course it was full moon, besides
thunderstorms rolling in every evening. The
rangers had set up telescopes and a presentation
anyway and planned to show at least the moon. We
sat through the lengthy, not very interesting,
Powerpoint presentation and by the time she was
done the clouds had covered the moon. She knew
the clouds were rolling in, why didn't she do
her presentation after we had a look through the
telescope, or at least shorten it a bit (a lot)?
Well, at least the caves were interesting. |

From Great Basin NP we headed back
to Ely to pick up the ordered inner tubes. Of
course they hadn't arrived yet..
We continued on our trip south on Hwy
93, a very hot ride with no shade at
all. |

We stopped to camp at Catheradl
Gorge State Park. A week earlier a
flash flood had wiped out the campground, so we
decided to camp in the day use area, which was
still open. Due to the heat we set up the tent
under the shelter in the shade. |

The next morning we rode the bikes
to the amazing cliffs and walked around a bit. |
|

|
We walked around the cliffs of
Cathedral Gorge and found several small
canyons that one can walk into, so we
did. Some of these canyons lead deep into the
rock and are just amazing to be in and look
around. Geology at work.
