Our rented Honda XR150L's.
Quite nice bikes, no race bikes, but they have
no problem going 50-55 mph. They are great for
some off-roading, light weight and easy to pick
up if needed (which we didn't).
We packed very light, one backpack each for a
two week trip.

On the way to San Ignacio,
Belize, along the Hummingbird Highway, we
stopped to visit St. Herman's Cave.
They also offer cave tubing there, which we
didn't do. |

Near the St. Herman's Cave is the
Inland Blue Hole, which is a swimming
hole. The entrance fee for the cave also
includes the swimming hole. We really enjoyed
the refreshing dip after the extremely humid
cave visit. Perfect to bring your body
temperature back to a normal level. |

In San Ignacio, Belize we stayed
at Hotel
Midas. We got their cheapest room, which
was all we needed. Their restaurant is good, the
pool was nice and the hotel is in walking
distance to downtown. Depending on which group
is staying at the hotel it can be a little loud
and/or rough at the pool with bar. We never
heard any of it a our cheap room was a little
off to the side. |

The next morning the weather
looked dry and we decided to ride our
motorcycles to the Caracol Mayan Ruins.
The road goes deep into the jungle to this very
remote archeological site and is 80 km/50 miles
long. About 2/3 of it are unpaved in 2023, but
they are working hard on improving it with new
bridges and eventually paving it.
It is highly recommended that you don't attempt
it when it has rained as the dirt/clay road
turns into very slick mud. 40 miles in we got
surprised by a short rain shower but it wasn't
enough to cause too much damage to the road
conditions. Even on the best days I highly
recommend to go with a 4x4 vehicle or off-road
capable motorcycle. This is NOT a road for
inexperienced riders. The road is much worse
than it looks in these photos, on the bad
sections I was too busy riding than to take
photos. |

In 2023 a military escort is
NOT required anymore, but you still need
to stop and sign in and out at the military
checkpoint, which is located about halfway in.

We made it to the Caracol
Archeological Park. It is an absolutely
amazing site and I recommend you make an effort
to go and see it.
Due to the remoteness and road conditions you
won't see many more tourists at the site. You
likely won't be entirely alone, but in the
expansive area you may not meet anybody except
for at the entrance. There are only about 20-30
visitors per day, which will probably change
once the road is paved.
