Gear review - Camping stool and seat

Hocker POLO   folding three leg stool   steel   650g   50cm long   Euro 2.95

I bought this folding stool in 2000, and have since taken it on more than 100,000km on my motorcycle. By now the seat cover is worn on the three edges, but it still holds. I am very pleased with this stool, especially with it's stability. Maybe I should mention that I weigh about 95kg. The stool is relatively comfortable, but in the long run a back rest is missing.

Hocker

The stool is also available in aluminium for 5.95, and weighs then only 420g, but I have heard of many aluminium stools where the legs snapped (maybe different manufacturers). The 230g less weight are more of a joke on a motorcycle, if I really wanted to safe weight I would do a diet and loose 10-15kg.

Coclusion: I absolutely recommend this stool, and the price is certainly unbeatable!

REI   Therm-A-Rest Chair 20" (51cm)   300g   60cm long   $29.95

Who already has a Therm-A-Rest sleeping mat might be interested in getting one of these camping seats. It is very comfortable, since one sits on the double folded mat and can really lean back, e.g. for reading a book. With a little experience one can stuff the sleeping mat into the cover in a few seconds, tighten the straps, done.

The packing size is with 60cm quite long, but other than that it folds and rolls together small, and is light.

Since one nearly sits on the ground one can also use the camping seat inside the tent, if one waits for the end of a monsoon rain. I use my panniers as a table for cooking and so on, but since the seat is so low I rather use the stool to cook and eat. Also at the camp fire this seat is not recommendable, as it only needs one spark to let the air out of the nightly sleep comfort.

The camping seat seems to be of good quality, since it still doesn't show any cracks or similar problems.

Conclusion: A very comfortable camping seat that is not too expensive, but not suitable for everything. I only take it on log trips to have a little comfort. Does one really need this seat? Certainly not, but it is nice to have it.
