Jack
Wolfskin Paragon mummy sleeping bag
1650g Ø23x30cm Euro 99.95
After I froze my butt off for years
in an old German military sleeping bag and a cheap summer sleeping bag
(both see below), I decided to spend some money and get a good sleeping
bag from a brand manufacturer.

The Jack Wolfskin
sleeping bag is comfortable and keeps warm well. But one can as well
use it in summer, then one simply doesn't close the zipper, or only
partially. It is breathable, meaning that it transports moisture
(sweat) to the outside. It isn't filled with down, but with plastic
fibers, which lets it dry out much faster. When there is frost at night
one should wear some warm socks and long underwear in the sleeping bag.
Then it stays cozy warm inside down to temperatures of about -5C, but
at -10C the fun is really over.
With the sewed on straps one can
further reduce the packing size of the rolled sleeping bag. One
shouldn't leave the sleeping bag compressed for long, as it will
otherwise loose part of it's insulating ability.
The sleeping bag has some
disadvantages too:
The outside is very slick, this means that if one couldn't put up the
tent absolutely flat, one will slide on the sleeping
pad during the night. If one then wakes up several times during the
night, because one slid down to the foot end again, that can go on ones
nerves.
The zipper is a total catastrophe. I never had such a tricky zipper
before. Especially if one wants to close and open the zipper from the
inside above the shoulder it can mean several minutes of fighting. This
is especially bad if one needs to go to the bathroom quickly at night,
because quick is not possible, and one has to watch out that there
isn't an "accident".
Conclusion: In principal it isn't a bad sleeping bag, but with the
extreme tricky zipper I have to say that I can not recommend this
sleeping bag. I had expected something better from a brand like Jack
Wolfskin, since the sleeping bag wasn't cheap!

Aldi
(Adventuridge) mummy sleeping bag
1650g Ø25x32cm Euro 16.95
This sleeping bag I bought as summer
sleeping bag at Aldi because it was so cheap. It is quite comfortable
and breathable, meaning that it transports moisture (sweat) to the
outside.
With the sewed on straps one can
further reduce the packing size of the rolled sleeping bag. The plastic
loops are much too weak, and therefore break after just a few times of
use.
The sleeping bad is available a right
and left version, meaning that one can zip them together as one double
sleeping bag. This is really nice for cuddling with ones partner, but
for sleeping it is too tight. Therefore we haven't used this function
often.
This sleeping bag is really only
usable as summer sleeping bag, as I had to find out in one frosty
night. If one closes the "loop" around the shoulder, which is a little
complicated, the sleeping bag keeps fairly warm, as the loop prevents
the warm air to get out at the top end. But if the temperature goes
below 10C, it gets uncomfortable, and when it goes towards freezing one
is absolutely freezing in the sleeping bag! I think during one frosty
night I was close to getting a dangerous hypothermia. But that wasn't
the fault of the sleeping bag, but mine, as I chose the wrong sleeping
bag for the wrong temperature.
Conclusion: This mummy
sleeping bag is, if one uses it in the correct temperature range,
absolutely recommendable. It is cheap, but has a good quality. It is
light and has a small packing size. As a summer sleeping bag it is
really all one needs. But don't forget: It is a SUMMER sleeping bag.

German
Military sleeping bag 3100g Ø21x43cm
Who hasn't seen a sleeping bag with
arms, here is one.
This sleeping bag was the standard
sleeping bag of the German military until the early 90's.
Congratulations to the guys that now have a different one - it can only
be better.
The German military sleeping bag has
a rubberised, waterproof outer cover, except for the breast area, and
it is absolutely not breathable. It has arms, that is a ice feature
e.g. for reading or shooting. It has a zipper across at knee height, so
that one can walk in it (or run away). A waterproof hood, which works
as rain protection, and as well as pack sack. One hood with cutouts for
the ears, so that one can hear the enemy.
For events this is a great sleeping
bag, as it is waterproof, and therefore mud and beer can easily be
washed off. For motorcycle trips it is much less recommendable, since
it is large, heavy and it doesn't really keep one warm. I took it on my
motorcycle trip to Iceland, and was freezing my butt off in some nights!
It is still available in some
army-stores, as a used and cleaned version.
